Fundraising
At this year's International Social, the children were encouraged to bring coins from home to donate to the relief efforts in Haiti.
Once the money was collected, the children got to work sorting and counting the coins.
Once this task was complete, they wrapped stack after stack of sorted coins.
Finally, they needed to tally and record the amount of money collected. As of today, the children have donated almost $60 from their own personal piggy banks! What a great job!

Yoga
On Monday mornings all three classes participate in yoga. Here the yoga instructor Marie begins class with a circle and some calm breathing:
The children have learned some of the classic yoga poses: tree, downward dog, rocking horse, table and many others. Marie makes it especially fun by incorporating other animal poses and sounds, and by teaching the children season appropriate yoga poses. Today's class was focused on winter animals and winter weather.
The teachers enjoy the classes too!

A Special Surprise
This morning the children from all three classes were brought to the gathering room for a special surprise....
Farmer Sarah had come for a visit and brought 12 eggs with her. The chick project begins today! Sarah showed the children how the eggs need to be kept in an incubator with water and light, for moisture and warmth.
She then told the children they will need to help the teachers turn the eggs three times a day, and soon they will hatch!
She showed us pictures of what the baby chicks look like inside the egg, including their "egg tooth," which they use to crack out of their egg when they're ready to hatch. She then explained how to care for the baby chicks, by feeding them and giving them fresh water every day.
Next she introduced the parents of the 12 eggs, Robert the Rooster and Rachel the Hen.
Sarah surprised the children by doing a REAL rooster sound, which was loud and very silly, and doesn't sound much like "cock-a-doodle-doo" at all!
The children asked questions about the rooster and hen, the baby chicks, and life on the farm. Farmer Sarah talked about how the rooster protects his family, and what kinds of food they like to eat. The kids were captivated!
In the coming weeks we'll be updating the blog on the progress of the baby chicks. Check back soon!

International Social
The UMS families had a great time at this year's International Social, an event where the children share their backgrounds and customs with their classmates, and learn about the various cultures of the UMS families. There was a large variety of food, crafts, maps, flags, books and clothing representative of the many different cultures among the children.

Saint Lucia
The Feast of Saint Lucia is a traditional Scandinavian holiday celebrated on December 13th, and features the oldest girl in a family (or in this case, classroom) carrying lights and sweets. Here are a few photos from the Saint Lucia Day celebration in the Seagulls classroom.
